Wonders of the Night Sky
Saturday 24 March 2012

Lunar Observing starting at sunset; Feb 25, Apr 1
Deep Sky observing starting 1 hour after sunset; Feb 18, Mar 24
Fee: No Charge

Howell Woods is a perfect spot for viewing the night sky because it is located away from city lights.  Our Wonders of the Night Sky programs are divided into two categories: lunar observing and celestial observing. Lunar observing is viewing the brightest object in our night sky…the moon.  There are many interesting physical features to see on the moon, due to both meteor strikes and geologic processes that have created unique craters, mountain ranges, lava flows and more.   Deep Sky  observing is viewing the sky when the Moon is not visible so that the planets, constellations and meteors are more visible.
Telescopes will be set-up by amateur astronomers; however, if you have your own telescope or binoculars, bring them with you.  These amateur astronomers will be available for interpretation and assistance.

All of the night sky viewing events will be held in the field in front of the learning center. Since light impairs night vision, we ask all participants be considerate and not shine car headlights on the telescope viewing area when driving into the parking area and minimize flashlight usage.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and check Howell Wood’s Facebook page to determine if the event is canceled due to clouds or poor weather.
