Simple Machines, Science in the Summer Program
From Monday 23 July 2012
To Wednesday 25 July 2012

science_in_the_summerThe Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will once again participate in the Science in the Summer Program. This year’s theme is : Simple Machines.

What is Science in the Summer?

GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer program in North Carolina is a fun and free science education program that helps elementary and middle-school children “grow into science.” Through classes held in your local public library and taught by certified teachers, this program gets kids excited about learning science with hands-on experiments. GlaxoSmithKline’s Science in the Summer is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and administered by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in partnership with local libraries and local parks and recreation departments.

How can my child participate?

All children must be pre-registered to attend Science in the Summer. A parent must go online to fill out the registration form for her or his child. Children are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation is free, but spaces are limited. Parents must register their children through SIS's online registration system, using any computer with an Internet connection. Registrations will be accepted in the order they are received until all spaces are filled. After online registration has been confirmed, the parent must complete and sign a release form before his or her child will be permitted to participate. This paperwork must be submitted to the SIS office by the specified due date in order to maintain the child's placement in the program.

  • Level I classes are for children entering grades 2 and 3 only.
  • Level II classes are for children entering grades 4 and 5 only.
  • Level III classes are for children entering grades 6, 7 and 8 only.

Below are the class level, time and dates the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield will be offering this summer. Please note the registration date. Classes fill very quickly (sometimes within hours!). We will post (on our Web page, Facebook page and on flyers in the library) the exact hour that registration will open.
