Carolina requires seat belts for front-seat
passengers; however, backseat passengers over age 16 are exempt. Failure to wear
seatbelts will result in a fine.

Children
under age five and under 40 pounds are required to ride in an approved child
safety seat. Children ages 5-16 are required to wear a seatbelt regardless of
where they sit in the car.

Motorist
must turn on headlights when windshield wipers are in use.
¨
Motorist
may turn right at a red light after coming to a complete stop, except where
specifically prohibited.

Motorcyclists must wear helmets and
burn headlights at all times.
¨
The legal
alcoholic beverage drinking age is 21 in North
Carolina.

Citywide
speed limit is 35 mph, unless otherwise posted. Out-of-town speed limits are 55
unless otherwise posted. The state speed limit is 55 mph unless otherwise posted
on sections of interstates and highways.

Driving
15 miles per hour over the posted speed limit or in excess of 70 mph is an
arrestible offense.
¨
The North
Carolina Safe Roads Act forbids a driver to consume an alcoholic beverage while
driving or to have an open container of an alcoholic beverage in the passenger
area (exceptions apply to motor homes and
limousines).

Drivers
license permits from other states are not valid in the state of
North
Carolina.
¨
"Bag-A-Bug" litter law states if
caught littering by a law officer you will be fined a minimum of $250.
