¨       North Carolina requires seat belts for front-seat passengers; however, backseat passengers over age 16 are exempt. Failure to wear seatbelts will result in a fine.

¨       Children under age five and under 40 pounds are required to ride in an approved child safety seat. Children ages 5-16 are required to wear a seatbelt regardless of where they sit in the car.

¨       Motorist must turn on headlights when windshield wipers are in use.

¨       Motorist may turn right at a red light after coming to a complete stop, except where specifically prohibited.

¨       Motorcyclists must wear helmets and burn headlights at all times.

¨       The legal alcoholic beverage drinking age is 21 in North Carolina.

¨       Citywide speed limit is 35 mph, unless otherwise posted. Out-of-town speed limits are 55 unless otherwise posted. The state speed limit is 55 mph unless otherwise posted on sections of interstates and highways.

¨       Driving 15 miles per hour over the posted speed limit or in excess of 70 mph is an arrestible offense.

¨       The North Carolina Safe Roads Act forbids a driver to consume an alcoholic beverage while driving or to have an open container of an alcoholic beverage in the passenger area (exceptions apply to motor homes and limousines).

¨       Drivers license permits from other states are not valid in the state of North Carolina.

¨       "Bag-A-Bug" litter law states if caught littering by a law officer you will be fined a minimum of $250.
