Agriculture is our heritage and we would love to share it with you!
Johnston County has the largest number of working farms in North Carolina, and continues to lead the nation in production of cash crops, including sweet potatoes. For several years, area farmers have expanded their operations to sustain the family farm, offering agritourism activities, farm markets, on-farm tours and promoting local products with pick-your-own operations.
If you grew up on a farm and want to reminisce, or you want to introduce to your children where local foods are produced, you will enjoy getting out and around the county. Several working farms and ag-businesses have educational options or tours: Lazy O Farm, Atkinson’s Mill, Banks Miniature Horses, Smithfield Ham Shop, Triple S Ranch, Fuzzy Faces Rescue, Smith’s Nursery and Boyette Farm’s Fear Farm and Lights on the Neuse events are very popular.
Johnston County now has three wineries for tours, special events and wine tastings: Gregory Vineyards, Hinnant Family Vineyard and Winery and our wine trail has expanded to include two new breweries on the Beer, Wine and Shine Trail! And it didn't take long for our local breweries to discover great produce options like watermelon and sweet potato for seasonal craft beers-- visit Deep River Brewing and Double Barley Brewing to get a taste! New on the trail this year is Broadslab Distillery, now offering tours and tastings Thursday-Saturday, 12N-5pm.
Tobacco Farm Life Museum has been offering agri-tourism educational programs and special events for over 25 years and continues to enhance the site with a restored homestead, farm life exhibits, one-room schoolhouse and more!
