Howell WoodsIf your ambitions while on vacation include a love for nature and enjoying the great outdoors, Johnston County has many options to consider.  A variety of hiking, biking, bird watching and nature activities may be enjoyed at Howell Woods Environmental Center, Neuse River Walk/Buffalo Creek Greenway, Clayton River Walk, and Clemmons Educational State Park. You may want to take a two hour leisurely canoe ride along the river or you can get active with your friends at McCoy Paintball near Princeton!  For biking on road, Johnston County offers four new bike trails and Legend Park in Clayton offers an 8-mile off-road course for beginners or experienced mountain bike riders.

For indoor/outdoor facilities your family can enjoy a visit to the Smithfield Recreation & Aquatic Center, Smithfield Community Park, or Clayton Community Center…all offer day passes for visitors. Walking trails and playground equipment and picnic shelters are located around the county's towns of Benson, Kenly, Four Oaks, Clayton, Smithfield and Selma.  Please check our websites links below for more detail listings.

If you love to golf, the county has six public and semi-private courses to play. Three are located in the Clayton and 40/42 area: Pine Hollow, Riverwood and The Neuse Golf Club offer championship quality courses.  In the central part of the county, select from Reedy Creek Golf Course, Johnston County Country Club or Cardinal Golf Course – all convenient to the I-95 corridor.
