For as long as he can remember, Ray Wheeler (aka “the Cornbread Man”) has dreamed of turning the old mill at Atkinson’s Mill Pond into a museum.
When Ray and Betty Wheeler arrived at the mill in 1958 with an infant son and little else, the mill became like a home. It may as well have been, as many hours as Ray and Betty, and the six children they would end up raising, would spend there.
Over the years, Atkinson’s grew and their cornbreads, breeders, and mixes became a household name in North Carolina and beyond. Today, Atkinson’s sells and distributes all over the country. Ray, Betty, their children, and work family have always stood by making products of the highest quality, at a fair price, and paired with excellent customer service.
The Old Grist Mill Museum at Atkinson is an expression of Ray’s love of milling and a reflection of how things were done when he arrived in 1958, and before. Come visit the museum and get a tour from The Cornbread Man himself. Ray Wheeler built this museum with the hope that people come to understand and appreciate his love of the mill. Come see his working demonstration of water-powered corn milling and the other related items Ray has built and collected over the years.
It’s educational, historical, and entertaining! It is certainly one of a kind, just like The Cornbread Man himself!
