Step onto the grounds of the largest Civil War battle fought in North Carolina—the Battle of Bentonville, March 19–21, 1865. This was the final major Confederate offensive and a last attempt to stop General William T. Sherman’s advance through the Carolinas.
Today, visitors can explore the historic Harper House (ca. 1855), which served as a Union field hospital during the battle. The downstairs rooms are furnished to reflect the hospital setup, while the upstairs rooms show how the Harper family lived during the war. Guided tours of the Harper House depart from the Visitor Center at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM. (Tour times are subject to change; groups of 10 or more should reserve in advance.)
The Visitor Center features a 15-minute film, museum exhibits with battlefield artifacts, troop movement maps, and a gift shop. Outside, you'll find a reconstructed kitchen, enslaved dwelling, monuments, and cemeteries—including a Confederate mass grave and the Harper family plot.
Explore over 6 miles of walking trails and a 10-mile self-guided driving tour across the original battlefield, with interpretive signage and historic markers highlighting key moments of the 3-day conflict. Picnic tables are available for visitors to enjoy a break on-site.
Accessibility: The Visitor Center is fully accessible. The Harper House and outbuildings have steps but can be accessed with assistance.
Programs & Events: Living history demonstrations and special events are held throughout the year, especially around the battle’s anniversary in March. Custom bus tours and group programs are also available by reservation.
