The Battle of Bentonville, fought March 19-21, 1865, was the last full-scale action of the Civil War in which a Confederate army was able to mount a tactical offensive. This major battle, the largest ever fought in North Carolina, was the only significant attempt to defeat the large Union army of Gen. William T. Sherman during its march through the Carolinas in the spring of 1865.
The battle was fought over an area of six thousand acres. More than four thousand men were reported killed, wounded, or missing during the 3-day battle. During the confrontation, wounded Union soldiers were taken to the farm home of John and Amy Harper, where a field hospital was established. Some wounded Confederates were likewise treated at this facility. The Harper House (c.1850’s) still stands; the home of John and Amy Harper functioned as a Union Field Hospital during the battle, as the Harper family lived in the rooms on the second floor. Visitors to the site will discover the downstairs are furnished to interpret a functioning Civil War field hospital, while the upstairs has period domestic furnishings.
A Confederate mass grave, the Harper family cemetery, and a tour trail leading to a section of Union XX Corps earthworks are also accessible to the public. Reminders of the battle are on exhibit in the visitor center along with an audiovisual program about the battle. Roads in the area are marked with highway historical markers highlighting events of the battle.
Admission fee for Harper House guided tours - $2 for adults and $1 for seniors & children. All donations are accepted and appreciated.
Bentonville also had over 6 miles of hiking trails you can learn more about here.
