The hours on this listing reflect those of the Johnston County Museum, located just a few blocks from the schoolhouse. Tours of the schoolhouse are currently only available by appointment and can be arranged by contacting Todd Johnson with the Johnston County Heritage Center at todd.johnson@johnstonnc.gov. 

Located in downtown Smithfield, the Freedmen's Schoolhouse is the only known remaining Schoolhouse for Freedom in North Carolina. Built between 1868 and 1869 by the federal Freedmen's Bureau under the auspices of the American Missionary Association, the school provided educational opportunities for formerly enslaved African Americans during the Reconstruction era.

Today, visitors can explore this significant historic site, learn about its restoration, and search online student records to discover the names of those who attended the school.
