***NOTICE: CLOSED UNTIL MAY 2025***
The Tobacco Farm Life Museum has been preserving the history and cultural heritage of Eastern North Carolina farm life for more than 35 years. The museum was started by a group of local families who had pride in their past and a strong volunteer spirit. Having seen the way of life of their parents and grandparents becoming obsolete, these families wanted to preserve this personal and special history of the tobacco farm family for future generations. The museum has grown to an internationally recognized and accredited museum and today continues to interpret and present this important rural legacy to the public.
Come visit and step back in time to a turn-of-the-century homestead, including a restored house and detached kitchen, smokehouse, log tobacco barn, and even an outhouse. The 6,000 square foot museum features both permanent and rotating exhibits on farm life, southern medicine, domestic skills, rural social life, and artifacts. Take a trip back in time to a simpler way of life. The general tour of the Museum includes a 15-minute film, a self-guided tour of the gallery and 8 buildings on site. We suggest 1.5-2 hours to tour the grounds.
The Museum is open year-round, however, is closed on Thanksgiving Day, December 24th-26th for the Christmas Holiday, and January 1st-15th.
Staff suggests bringing an umbrella in case of rain, as many of the buildings have shelters but there are no covered walkways between buildings. The museum may close for snow, hurricanes, or other severe weather conditions. Visitors can check our Facebook page or call our office at 919-284-3431 for further details on closing due to severe weather conditions.
Also, be sure to check out the Stepping into the Past Series the second Saturday of each month for demonstrations and displays of traditional arts, crafts and trades are featured on-site. All activities are included with regular admission to the Museum with annual passes available. Activities are subject to vendor/demonstrator participation and weather. Some activity materials may require additional costs. Visit www.tobaccofarmlifemuseum.org or call 919-284-3431 for further details.
